The Dow futures are down 110 points. What, did the President give a speech this weekend?

Martha:

Do you mean his Burma one last Friday?

Britestar:

Another lagging indicator of the Bush articulation.

SULLY:

Hey Gary, have some compassion, It is not easy to speak with a forked tongue.

Britestar:

The Native American in me is laughing at the rest.

Billarysdone:

Nothing to do with the President. The market was long overdue for an adjustment. I believe there's more to come. Imagine though what will happen if someone like Hillary gets in office.

Martha:

It will get better when the Democrats get into office ;)

Britestar:

It is earnings season, and markets go do when earning do not meet expectations. Since modern markets are not the old commodity based markets that the Republican get their support from, it should go up with any Democrat as President.

Billarysdone:

LOL, just like taxes.

Britestar:

Since that tax break means we now have a $9.1 trillion national debt on the year the deficit was suppose to be paid off, the people will be paying taxes and giving welfare to the banks for years to come. Only the rich got a tax break to any extent, anyway.

Ginger:

Maybe it will go up like it did when the last Clinton was in office. From 1992 to 2000 the Dow went up over 200%. The Clinton administration ushered in the greatest economic expansion in this countries history.

Since Bush took office the market has gained less than 8% over the Clinton period. He has also spent the largest surplus ever and created the greatest deficit ever.

Do you think our economy can withstand another republican administration?

Britestar:

It is so much easier, just to tell people how good everything is, than to make it so.

Are you a chart reader? The S&P 500 recently formed a head and shoulders top. Left shoulder on Oct.5, head on Oct. 9, right shoulder Oct 12. The neckline was broken through on Oct. 15.

Britestar:

Cramerica knows what that means. I'm more like that Joe, who has to be taught to read a chart, because I can't figure why someone would want to use a chart to make a complicated trade in the first place. I, honestly, don't even know what a complicated trade is.

Globally Interested:

Cramer says that he doesn't use charts and technicals; but, did you ever notice that when you call in a stock he almost always looks at the chart.

The charts do not show you the fundamentals. Chart patterns are more of a psychological indicator. Take the simple double top where the second top is not quite as high as the first. It shows that the market is starting to lack confidence at that price level. It has more to do with the investors and traders than it does with the company.
A straddle might be what you would call a complicated trade. That is where you buy the first call option above the current price and th first put option below the current price. If the stock swings far enough in either direction, you win.

Britestar:

I prefer analysis. Even if a company has good fundamentals, there are factors that can overwhelm it. I need to know what the traders are doing to the stock, particularly if the stock is not a large cap and it's price is easily changed. I follow all markets, currency fluctuations, and commodities to get the general economic conditions of the time.

Everyone uses charts to some degree. I find it easier to do it myself, and would not rely on Joe whether he could read a chart or not. It would take a lot of money to be beyond my ability to manage it. I lose money when I am forced to have others manage it, like annuities down 3.3% last quarter. I hope that linoleum was comfortable.

When doing an analysis it is good to include the sector and industry. I use IBD's industry group ranking as a starting point. However, it is fairly expensive. The basic subscription to the site is ~$40/ month. To include the industry groups is an additional $40. I have found it to be worth the money. It is the only paid site that I subscribe to.
