How far will we (the US) go to feed our oil addiction?

It is an addiction, I hope you agree.I've been reading about the struggles of societies to change from coal to natural gas, gas to gasoline. It's how the US came to dominance. Demand for oil is increasing worldwide. It's not "our oil." We have so much tied to oil and prices WILL increase as demand increases for an ever decreasing supply. Why are we not pushing harder toward national security. If oil supplies were cut by even 25%, we'd be "hurtin' fer certain." How can we remain in such a precarious position? Don't we need the government to help promote alternative energy? (No, not ethanol.) Solar and Wind in many European countries is making huge strides. And we... aren't.$3 trillion for the war... could have been a lot of research and development... Now that's national security.
SULLY:

Excellent points Michael. You open you statement by asking "How far will we (The US) will go......? Is it really about the citizens, or is it about the industry, the politicians, the lobbyist? Do you believe the average citizen wouldn't quickly vote to change this situation. Crude was over $109, an hour ago and running around $107 right now. We are powerless, unless we are willing to make some very drastic changes. Both in our personal lives and in the way we allow , yes allow our government to run. We have choices They are hard ones.
I agree, oil is an addiction.......The government is our pusher.
The pusher has the most to gain. The users just fade away and die.

SULLY:

Now, you may tell me how I should have answered. :)

Ej:

Well of course the average citizen would vote to change this.. I bet they would vote to change obesity and the existence of bad people.. and lots of things. The point is, its not that simple. We are way behind and that is not solely the fault of our politicians. Do you drive a car? Is it a hybrid? Do you car pool? Those are the things we can individually do right now. That, and vote. But sitting around complaining about Bush (who will be gone soon anyway) and how the "government" should fix our lives is not going to help.

SULLY:

My great grandchildren will still be complaining about Bush. I do agree the problem is not very simple. Yes, I drive. also take a bus when it is reasonable.
I do not think the average citizen gets the full scope. They only know their gas prices are rising. Have a good day. I am driving to a luncheon that is 30 miles away. :(

FAST CAT:

Yes Elexa, I agree with you. The government and their "special interests" like the oil industry are the pushers and the liars. We need our government to support us "the people" for a change.

SULLY:

Where id Michael?

SULLY:

IS

Aditya:

Ha! You think I hang around on QnA all day?

Elexa, you must have known I'd agree with you on this one. Yes, the decisions and changes will be extremely difficult. We will complain mightily, but there is one fact that must be considered: oil is a finite resource. It WILL run out. We simply cannot continue to follow the same, single-minded path. People in the oil biz will also kick and scream, but there's no reason why they can't be made to do some of the research from their record profits.

This is not a problem for any one group. It is everyone's problem and we must face it together, pursuing real solutions as best we can. Again, look at what is being done with solar power in Germany. Investors are making big profits and the country is getting the bulk of its power needs met through solar. It can be done, but it takes political will, and most politicians lack it (except Obama). :)

Ej:

We would have a lot less money and man power for this research if we were fighting this war on our own soil.. just a thought.

Aditya:

Oh, the assumptions some people make.

Ej:

This is not the first time you have responded to one of my posts with a statement like that. Don't assume ignorance in others. This whole site works when people are open minded and share views. Making statements like the one above is not insightful or inspiring to a conversation.

Aditya:

Fine. Please explain how you believe "terrorists" will "follow us" to the US. My mind is open. Explain in terms OTHER than rhetoric.

Yes, GW said it. Does that make it true? He also got us into Iraq because he said there were WMDs.
Hmmm... no WMDs.

We were attacked on 9-11 by a small terrorist group led by bin Laden. Bin Laden had majoor money to spend and was smart enough to plan the attack. Our gaurd was down. We didn't recognize the signs in time. We were hit.

Now are guard is up. How much do we spend on Homeland Security every year! We now KNOW about al Qaeda. We know about bin Laden (though it beats me why we stopped looking for him). Most middle easterners are poor. So PLEASE explain to me how all these poor middle easterners are going to get to the US.

You simply must ask these questions and not rely on silly fear mongering tactics. War on Terror isn't a strategy. It's a bumper sticker.

Now we'll see how open YOUR mind is.

Aditya:

BTW - My question is about dependencve on foreign oil. Do you know what would happen if we were cut off by only a small percentage? This is a national security issue, so if you want to get off the war mongering and talk about other legitimate issues, that would be appropriate. If someone blows up a big oil refinery in Saudi Arabia, gas prices would double over night! Are our boys dying in the middle east so we can continue our addictive lifestyles?

No Hillary:

If, and when, an alternative source is found, don't be so quick to start turning flips. People and large companies getting involved in searching for these methods are in it for the money. You will still pay dearly for your needs - whether it is fuel, drugs or insurance.

Aditya:

No doubt. If you believe in capitalism, then you understand the need for profits, but the alternatives still must come.

FAST CAT:

Okay, we already have the technology COMPLETELY developed to remove us from our oil dependency. It is already in full use in our government's underground facilities. What we need are honest leaders that care about the people they are suppose to serve. This technology was reported in the Steven Greer disclosure in 2001. Also, appearing in this disclosure are many high ranking officials validating this information. If you research Nicola Tesla, he had a working model as far back as the 1950's, but his funds were pulled by the gas and oil industry who were subsidizing him at that time, once they realized they could profit more with the diesel engine. Have you noticed that this is the one area that we have not progressed? Think about all the other advances we have made with microwaves, computers, entertain systems, medical equipment, telephones, etc.

FAST CAT:

I made a mistake, its been awhile since I've read all of this. He had a working model by the early 1900's. Nikola's funds were pulled by J. Piermont Morgan when Morgan couldn't find a way to attach a meter to it.
