If democrats want to propose this Global Poverty Act (H.R. 1302); Why can't we use the money to.....

Help build irrigation systems, and industry in Mexico instead of Africa? If we help our neighbor it would probably be beneficial to the whole continent I would think. How do you feel about issues like this?
Holly:

Actually, by reading the entire bill (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h110-1302) I don't see how any new money would directly come into play, nor help in building infrastructure (e.g. irrigation, industry) be a part of the plan. Instead, if you look at section 4, paragraph C, items 1 thru 8, show that the method of implementation of this bill would be continued efforts in already existing acts to fight diseases (AIDS/HIV, malaria) and help trade programs. It would also encourage businesses/corporations to get involved, and to help attack the problem financially (e.g. debt forgiveness, and working with international financial institutions.) No nation is singled out, so Mexico could (and probably is) a target of this bill... I'm pretty sure there are folks living in Mexico that are under the $1 limit as defined in the bill.

Side note, we can solve malaria by use of DDT... it's ban back in the 70's (i think) was completely unfounded, and was a large political move by the left for fear of it killing rainforests and creating global issues (they only later learned that most of oxygen is created by oceanic algae, not rainforests, nor would DDT spread to rainforests if not used in actual rainforests like Africa.)

I don't think that we need to be involved in building Mexico's industry... we should continue helping our neighbors in creating new policies, and training their leadership to help fix their own issues. This act does include some trade leveraging policies, and it does mention an increase in non-governmental participation. Ultimately, sometimes, people need to become really sick before they're willing to help. Is Mexico a case like this? I don't think so, but I could be wrong-- either way, it would indeed benefit us to help them... by creating a better environment in Mexico, would alleviate som

I'm all for the sister city program. We have them in Japan, why not Mexico?
We can learn and help eachother.
That's what it's all about right?
I personally think we SHOULD single out Mexico and concentrate our efforts there.
Regardless of what other people say here, I think once given the opportunities and the FULL support Mexico can become great and I think it would open up new avenues for trade and build a better relationship between our two countries.
But you raised some interesting points here J Dawg, I certainly appreciate it.

Holly:

This type of stuff isn't going to happen unless people (perhaps like yourself) take the time and effort into pushing these ideas to those that can implement policy... I think you know what you need to do.... As for singling out Mexico, this bill probably won't do that, but anybody can put in legislation (e.g. write a bill) that would... we can do so much to help people without spending any money.

One of America's greatest resources is it's people: our creativity, intuition and generosity... it doesn't need to cost us anything to help. We just need somebody to ask us to.

One Twisted Child:

I still want to see exactly how they plan on paying for it. Furthermore, I cannot fathom why this should take precedence over improving the situation here at home first. It boggles my mind to say the least. Whatever happened to "think globally, act locally"?

Soonvapor:

Yeah, I agree that we should concentrate on ourselves for a while, but what I'm getting at is
IF we do have to spend the money, why can't we choose who we help?
Wouldn't it be in our interest to help Mexico?

One Twisted Child:

Of course it would be beneficial fiscally, but the question really boils down to what would be the most beneficial for the politicians pulling for the bill. It is sad when those we elect are more concerned with furthering their careers, rather than furthering the standard of living for the average American.

Koko:

No, we should not help Mexico. The problem with Mexico is that they have a corrupt government. Their people need to change that and we need to keep them from taking the easy way out and coming here for freebies. Cut off benefits to illegals and they'll be forced to deal with their own problems.

Soonvapor:

Well i don't see why we couldn't get more involved and work WITH the Mexican government to cut out corruption.
There are resources there that could be utilized to make them more self sufficient and stimulate their economy and ours.
But if we just stay stubborn and keep having the mind frame of building walls then it just
defeats any purpose. Suit yourself.
Mexicans are hard workers, who don't have any problem coming here and fighting for the US in the milatary, and work for capitalists and pay taxes just like anyone else.
It is good for the economy.
Don't say I'm talking out my *** because most of my family is from Mexico and came here the legal way and did ALL OF THE ABOVE.
End of story!

Koko:

REAL ME, that's all fine, and I don't think you're talking out your ***. I applaud your family for wanting to be part of America instead of coming here illegally, grabbing what they could get, and not pay taxes. We've tried to work with Mexico but the government still refuses to do anything to help their own people or to help stop the flow of drugs into this country. We've already thrown too much money at the problem. The Mexican people have to make the change, you can't work with somebody when all they do is take your money, then **** on you.

Soonvapor:

Well I still think it's better than sending 800 billion to Africa.
Where there is just as much corruption if not MORE!

Koko:

There is definitely more. The best thing we could do for other countries is set an example of how capitalism can give people a better life. If we stopped screwing it up by injecting socialism into it, the standard of living here would be far better than it is now. Then, other countries could do what we do if they want to prosper. Since when did we become responsible for the welfare of the rest of the world? We need to hide the piggy bank.

One Twisted Child:

Very well said Seeker.

Brian P. O'Gorman:

Why give it away at all?

Koko:

Thank you Joe.
