DoesDeathDefyDemons?

Is China's emerging capitalist economy a larger threat to the US than their Communist government?

Aditya:

Great question!

So many people get hung up on government ideologies and forget that the people have an impact, regardless of their government's rhetoric (or ours).

Capitalism requires growth, but finite resources on the planet will make that difficult as time marches on. We know some of the problems, but we are far too focused on our own day-to-day lives to make the changes necessary to survive.

Mac....Of Moot and Mac:

No.....and the Communist style of govt. is more of a threat to the Chinese people

DoesDeathDefyDemons?:

They aren't a threat to our marketplace or way of life?

Aditya:

Mac - I think you should consider this a little more.

China is hungry for resources (including oil) and they will do business with anyone we don't do business with, i.e., our enemies. We complement each other in some ways, but when push comes to shove, we may be fighting over resources.

China's cheap labor already affects American workers more than Communism ever did.

Dimview09:

A threat as is terms of competition Yes.

DoesDeathDefyDemons?:

That competition isn't only in the marketplace of cheap toys. They will be searching for more cheap sources of natural resources soon enough. And with 1.3 billion subjects who have no choice, that makes a big occupation force.

Dimview09:

Now that sounds scary, they own 10% of our land already al they would have to do is foreclose>

Heather:

Yes, on the manufacturing aspect. But, the best and most inventive minds are still here in the USA. Our culture rewards inventive thought theirs not so much!

DoesDeathDefyDemons?:

In WWII, we turned our immense industrial machine into a war machine, do you think the Chinese can follow suit? They don't need to invent anything, they have 1.3 billion soldiers at their disposal.

Heather:

if they don't get a handle on their trashing the environment they will be dying off in huge numbers from cancer!

LOVELYLOVELACE:

Probably not for the next 15 to 20 years, but, then ,look out!

DoesDeathDefyDemons?:

If they continue to gobble up their natural resources, as well as those they import from overseas, they'll be fighting soon for their survival.

Alabama:

Absolutely. They couldn't beat us on the battlefield but they are kicking our behinds at the store.

DoesDeathDefyDemons?:

Umm, that was 50 years ago. I think the playing field is a bit different now.

Aditya:

Nukes have a way of equalizing things. Neither country is in a position to "beat" the other without significant changes to life as we know it.

Rick:

yes because they are buying the US. I'm highly invested in the Chinese market.

DoesDeathDefyDemons?:

Oh, so the better they do, the better you do? Or are you trying to buy back the US one piece at a time?

Rick:

I just invest in things that go up.

Aditya:

Oil goes up, and pays for lots of terrorism in the world. Short-term gains may ultimately lead to long-term losses.

.......:

If it were truely a capitalist society... but it's not. That's a misnomer. The vast majority of all business in China is still firmly under control of the government. Ever see those Cosco shipping containers and trucks? (not Costco!). They are directly connected to the Red Army via the government. They even have a huge port (base) of operations Long Beach, CA thanks to Clinton. They are here and not leaving.

DoesDeathDefyDemons?:

The combination of capitalism and totalitarianism is a fierce machine. They are marketing themselves well, and positioning themselves for a huge global move. Yes, it's not a truly capitalist society, but the influx of luxuries into their economy is distracting the populace.

.......:

The best hope for dragging the country down to our level, the internet and adult entertainment. Along with the demands for a better quality of life. The real key, exposure to information outside the control of the central government. Oddly enough, the same thing as far as news is happening here, in large part due to the Internet and alternative media sources.

Aditya:

The US is also not a purely capitalist society. You can say it's a misnomer, but the reality is increased competition for resources and markets.

Good comment from tg10is.

I think it's true that China's growing middle class is a lot like our middle class, repleat with market seductions, but 1.3 Billion Chinese cannot join the middle class levels of consumption without a huge change in the environment and loss of available resources.

Weyana:

It would seem that China should be respected for building strength. Maybe we could learn from that. Not every country or every individual that does well should be considered a "threat" The Chinese citizens are people working to survive just as we do. Perhaps we are the threat for waging war when alliances would better suit everyone's survival

Aditya:

Good comment.

I agree we are much alike, but if the Chinese people aspire to join our levels of consumption, the Earth cannot fully support it.

The US is 5-6% of the world's population, but consumes 20-25% of the world's resources. Now add China with its 20% of the world's population, and India's additional 20% of the population and their aspirations for comfort, food, shelter, etc.

Weyana:

Perhaps we should reduce our consumption to be more equitable - shouldn't the Chinese have 20% and the US 5%?

Blue Gypsy Rose:

absolutely.....we are underestimating the Chinese Gov. as we did the terrorists.....may be the rate at which they have infiltrated the daily American way of life, is more dangerous than their communist government and the real threats: like the terrorists, like the spreading of Islam, like so many organizations we fund, they are waiting for the moment to strike against us from within.....just like an undetected cancer...
