Is socialism justified in an extreme economic crisis?

MaggieD:

Yes. During extreme economic crisis, the government needs to step up and disperse available assets across all economic classes in order to get the economy up and running again. The problem with it is that, once in place, it seldom, if ever, goes away.

No-spp2007:

Interesting! But what I was talking about was, is it acceptable for the State to takeover say 3/4 of the rich and powerful 's wealth in time of crisis or not?

MaggieD:

No, that's not the way socialism works. That's confiscation, not socialism. The government would never have to confiscate anything. They'd just print more money. Or go further into debt. And then distribute that money in the form of social programs that would get our economy up and running again.

Thank you MaggieD, now I am clear with what you meant in your answer. Socialism historically and conceptually is based on "confiscation" of the rich's fortune wholly or most of it. My question MaggieD, would you personally find the practice "objectionable" and if so why?

MaggieD:

I think I'm defining socialism wrong, then. Let me change my answer to say no. My concept of socialism is "socialist type" programs. That's where my answer was coming from. I don't think the government should "take over" the assets of another...including private enterprise. I also think there would be no need in a national emergency. The PEOPLE can solve any national emergency without confiscation of wealth. Socialism, as you are defining it (and probably rightly so) is a mere step away from Communism. And we all know that Communism doesn't work. (Or least I do.)

Thank MaggieD for your comment, very interesting and useful.

@ Justice Lover, Socialism has never meant taking 3/4 of the rich and powerful's (sic) wealth, please give me an instance of this!

Lyinn:

No. Socialism is a horrible fairytale. In small groups(collectives) like a kibbutz or a commune it works as long as everyone is on the same page. This is very rare. (have you read Animal Farm?) Socialism has failed miserably in every country that has tried it including the US (Commonwealths like VA, MA, & PA} sometimes with horrific results like genocide. We witnessed a century of such failures. The problem with socialism is it creates huge bureaucracies that breed corruption and crumble under their own weight often with the aforementioned results. One has only to look at the history of socialism and those involved (Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Fidel Castro to name a few ) to understand the consequences of this twisted philosophy. Coincidentally, the tendency towards Socialism occurs mainly during harsh economic times when people are most vulnerable to the rants of megalomaniacs. To date the only successful social programs in the US occurred
under FDR during the Great Depression. These programs worked because they had built in expiration dates much like those currently placed on welfare programs.

Thank you Not so average Joe ;) But your analysis of Macro -Socialism could only come clear by comparing it to other economic systems. Your last bit of your answer is relevant to my question and thank you for that.
