Did you know that some economists think that increasing taxes on the wealthy will hurt the economy?

BIDEN: “I don't know any economists who are saying that.”
Nitrovance:

The rich one that pretending he aeconomists

MaggieD:

ANOTHER BIDEN GAFFE!!!! His own running mate says differently!!! Hahahaha!!! http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/obama/1150162,tax090708.article

"WASHINGTON — Democrat Barack Obama says he would delay rescinding President Bush’s tax cuts on wealthy Americans if he becomes the next president and the economy is in a recession, suggesting such an increase would further hurt the economy."

Such a joke!!!! Even Obama HIMSELF knows that increasing taxes on the rich is bad for the economy. Un-freakin-believable that the man who's going to INCREASE THE TAXES ON THE RICH acknowledges that it hurts the economy. Sigh...

Dunrunnin:

Well we know your not rich, so why are you complaining?

MaggieD:

How do you know that, Texas?

MaggieD:

Help those that are not rich by not spending so much so their taxes go down. Novel idea, huh? ;-)

Heather:

The Rich are only a 5% of the nation...let their asses get taxed....more

MaggieD:

@ Rebel -- Quote: "In 2002 the latest year of available data, the top 5 percent of taxpayers paid more than one-half (53.8 percent) of all individual income taxes, but reported roughly one-third (30.6 percent) of income." How 'bout your a** gets taxed? Finally. http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/incometaxandtheirs/a/whopaysmost.htm

Heather:

hey i get taxed all year ..pay my own tution.....no healthcare....and at the end of the year i just get like 200 dollars back....

Lovely:

The facts and common sense are not a liberal's long suit MaggieD! ;-)

Brian P. O'Gorman:

Well done Maggie!

Svwhu:

I like the way you quote what % of tax the top 5% income bracket paid. Now can you also quote what % their income was compared to all income. What is the average income of that top 5% income bracket. Take the bottom 20% wage earner, earns less then $20,000. The bottom 40% earns less then $36.000. the Bottom 60% earns less then $58,000.......Please tell us what precentage of tax you believe they should pay since the top 5% makes well more then 58% more money then they do?

Lovely:

So insiteful your solution is to give a rich man's money to those who have not earned it. When I see you take the money you have and give it to those who make less money than you do, I might just buy into your argument, but that will never happen because you are more interesting in taking money than you are in giving it away.

Heather:

Not much a big deal when the oponent...believes
Mc Cain yesterday said that he still believes the U.S. economy "fundamentals" are strong.
But a new ad from the McCain campaign said, "Our economy in crisis. Only proven reformers John McCain and Sarah Palin can fix it. Tougher rules on Wall Street to protect your life savings. No special interest giveaways. Lower taxes to create new jobs. Offshore drilling to reduce gas prices."
The Obama campaign ridiculed the commercial.
"Today of all days, John McCain's stubborn insistence that the 'fundamentals of the economy are strong' shows that he is disturbingly out of touch with what's going in the lives of ordinary Americans," spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. "Even as his own ads try to convince him that the economy is in crisis, apparently his 26 years in Washington have left him incapable of understanding that the policies he supports have created an historic economic crisis."
Tax the Rich ..they have more money just laying around....

MaggieD:

Why you don't you answer the question by some other way than slammin' the other side? Anddddd, why don't you get your facts straight? He did not say, "Our fundamentals are strong." He said: "Our basic fundamental are sound." Unlike Obama who said: "We are facing the worst financial crisis since the depression in 1939." Obama should be horse-whipped for that statement. Stoooopid. Self-fulfilling prophesy -- just IMAGINE if he were the president and had said that. Unbelievable.

You are being manipulated, Rebel. We all are. We are arguing semantics and parsing words that our candidates say and saying, "GOTCHA!!!!" when we should be looking at the issues. We're LETTING the candidates do this to us. And it's just plain wrong!!!!!!!

Heather:

hey Mc Cain said it and now he is trying to back off...Obama just stated what the whole country believes...unlike Mc Cain ..he doesn't get what the rest of the nation see's ..he's in the 5%.....ask Donald Trump if its bad for him....lol....

Lovely:

The fundamentals of learning are reading, writing and arithmetic. Does it mean the fundamentals are bad because some kids are failing those subjects.

The same goes with our economy. The basic fundamentals of it are sound and healthy.

And I have not heard Obama or Biden say that that our ecomomic fundamentals are a failure. Instead they try to tie McCain's remarks to the present economic situation, and any nut job knows that a congress overflowing with liberal democrats has done absolutely nothing to help. They remain idle while blaming Bush and hoping even more people will lose their jobs until they gain the POWER of the presidency.

They are wrong for not taking any action to help resolve the economic problem. If you don't believe me, explain what have they have done to help?

Heather:

the republicans have been in congress for over 12 years and they expect the new democratic congress to fix all their mistakes in 12 months.....lol....

Baroque:

Ditto that Blade

Lovely:

@Rebel. The democratic congress has been in power for 2 years-not 12 months. They made many promises or were they outright lies saying they would lower gas prices, save the economy and give people money they couldn't afford to borrow for a new home.

The congress filled with democrats is a failure and their popularity among the people is a whopping 9%. That's about 21% lower than the much "hated" Bushes popularity ratings.

Svwhu:

Do you know that they were proven wrong during the Clinton administration. Obama will only put the tax level back to what it was under the Clinton administration when the economy was good. It will only effect those making $250,000.00 or more. GW Bush gave the wealth these tax breaks and look what that has done for the economy and the deficit!

Cookie:

You do know that Congress controls the economy and Clinton had a republican Congress right? You do know that the economy is much worse today than it was in 2006 and we switched to a Democratic congress in 07. You do know that the states that have lower taxes have done better in the current economy than states that have high taxes correct? Please learn the actual issues and don't just believe what you are told.

Svwhu:

Again conservatives feel the need to insult someone else's intelligence to bolster their agreement. If you look back at history as a whole Reagan lowered taxes on the upper class, followed by a greatly increased deficit, followed by five or six tax hikes. Clinton raised taxes and cut government spending, followed by a lower deficit, a balanced budget and a booming economy. Bush cut taxes to the wealth, told us all to go spend and now we have a exploded deficit, out of control spending, deregulation and an economy that is in deep trouble. Eight years of republican BS has just about brought this country down and now you want to blame the democratic congress that has been there for less then two years of it. Most of what we are seeing in the consequence of what happened before the last two years. You conservatives really do take people to be as big of idiots as you are.

Lovely:

I agree insiteful. Conservatives are not small minded idiots like them liberals. LOL!

Svwhu:

You better read my words again Blade! Apparently you don't comprehend either!

Cookie:

That would be because there are very few "wage earners" that make over 250k a year most making over that are the people providing every job and a lot of the products we buy. Raise taxes on the company you work for guess who pays more for their insurance next year , gets a smaller raise, and see's a smaller match to your 401k. Raise taxes on the companies that produce milk bread eggs beef etc. guess who pays the difference the people buying milk bread eggs beef etc. So if you tax the rich who actually pays?

Shippergirl:

Speculation & Republican fear tactics - eather way, taxes won't impede growth of economy, they will just help finance it.

Lovely:

Taxes don't provide growth for the economy. Investment by the private sector does that. Government is not and should not be in the business of growing the economy.

When they try it conflicts with companies and corporations in the private sector who may be bidding for the same work.

Shippergirl:

Thats ridiculous - look at private sector investments on Wall Street this week - took the Government to keep it afloat. Taxes are used to improve our infrastructure - creating jobs and growth - taking care of our country today and for the future. We are lucky to have a government big enough to address our common needs (like Interstate Highway System and National Forest Management...)

Donorth:

I have no idea just how "Increasing the taxes on the wealthy" could hurt the economy.
It is no secret (unless it is to you) that the "wealthy" have several tax lawyers and loop-holes in their pockets, to either avoid or saving on taxes. WHAT? You're surprised? Please. Get real, would you.
It's the middle-class who suffer. AND, the poor.
Were I wealthy, I would consider it my social responsibility to pay (not only) my fair share of taxes ---- but would consider it indumbent upon me to help "distribute" the wealth.
Take Bill Gates. This guy has more money than God. In fact, he can loan God a few bucks, if he needs it. His "contribution" to society? Get real. Name something this rich ah as done for our Country??? Go ahead ---- I wan't to hear it --- other than his "donating" a bunch of "used, out-of-date" computers to "this school or that school".
It's a simple equation (it's SUPPOSED to be --- except the "rich" found a way to get around it) ---- the MORE you earn --- the MORE you pay.
And --- what's WRONG with THAT?? Except THAT flies into the face of reality, as we know it. What's the old saying? Oh, yeah: "The rich get richer --- the poor get poorer". So much for America and the way the IRS chooses to "tax" the "rich".
How NICE for them!!! Whatever happened to the REST OF US ???

Lovely:

So you think government provides growth and creates the jobs in our economic structure.

You are so mistaken to think the rich will invest into a system that punishes them more than it already does. Tax them more and they will invest elsewhere. It's that simple.

Porkenstein AKA Pork, Porky, Porkens:

Well, you could do the ostrich impression like Hillary and just say "I don't listen to economists, I just go with what I know."
