If gas hits $5.00 a gallon (and it's just a matter of time), will you alter your lifestyle

significantly? (Unless you're filthy rich of course)...do more walking, hahaha?
AngelOfHarlem:

It sure will...it will mean either A) I have moved to America or B) the dollar has replaced pound sterling ...but I wouldn't complain as it would mean a reduction of 56 cents!
Gas (or petrol as it correctly called here in UK) is $5.65 in my neck of the woods.

The Oracle:

That's just carzy...so then the offshore oil in Britain meant pretty much nothing?

AngelOfHarlem:

Oh not at all, its vintage oil, best in the world and by jimminy we are prepared to pay top 'dollar' for that stuff....my car just can't get enough of it...

XoXoHayleighXoXo:

no more so than when everything else goes up

The Oracle:

Do you really think so, in comparison? Oil was once around 20 bucks a barrel....now a hundred...have other things gone up THIS much?

XoXoHayleighXoXo:

when i was a young child coke was 5 cents in a glass bottle. a loaf of bread was 10 cents. when i was 18 a hershey bar was 5 cents. When I was 21 a 4,000 sq foot mansion in Mesa, Arizona was $35,000. If I'M not mistaken a gallon of milk today costs more than a gallon of gas.

Slap Daddy:

Fortunately, I have a company vehicle that I take home with me. all fuel paid by the company,I wonder how many people find themselves in the vicious circle of not having enough fuel in their car to make it to work, to get paid, to get more fuel, sad to think about im sure there are many

The Oracle:

Yes, count your blessings.....It IS a sick, vicious circle- great answer.

Ssfury:

In my one job, I'm reimbursed for mileage, but it just went up to LAST YEAR's state reimbursement rate...it's always a year behind. :(

In my businesses, I can claim the mileage, which sure makes the difference in what I have to pay.

Actually, last year already I altered my lifestyle, and I found I have to alter it back this year...no kidding. :)

The Oracle:

It's not fair, damn it. In the Mideast, gas is as low as a buck something....It's their oil, sure, but WE built it, our technology, our investments originally...they wouldn't have a drop of oil were it not for the people and countries who helped them develop it. Bastards! And they haven't even paid us for the cost of the first Gulf War, let alone ths one!

Pete:

Where I live, we don't have sidewalks! And there's no possibility of walking to work. That's life in the boonies. I am farther from my mailbox than people in cities live in relation to their jobs (which is why we only check our mail 2-3 times a week). Anyway, there are a lot of people who don't have a choice about how much they drive, unless that choice is moving. I expect we can cut down on extraneous shopping trips, the kids can go without milk, right...

The Oracle:

Oh sure, gas before milk!....This is ridiculous, we have got to do something!

Nell:

Well i would have to figure out a different way to heat my home that is for sure, and i would have to find a way to get my boss to put me at the school around the corner from me so i would not have to drive to work any more. Then i would be cooking on the grill a lot since I have a gas stove. I better save now to get an electric stove.

take care

The Oracle:

But they'll just raise those rates too...ooops, I should not have said that......This is a no win deal, oil will strangle us.

Nell:

I guess then i better save to move to Florida so when i am homeless i will still be warm lol. greed really is an evil thing :(

take care

The Oracle:

Sad. I don't know why people always have to have more than what they already have. OPEC is already so rich, they need not ever sell another drop of oil and they'd still be set for generations to come.

________________________:

Well, I'm certainly not filthy rich, but I'm retired and don't drive all that much except to run errands around my town and to visit my Dad who lives 30 miles from my home. I really feel for the working people with families who live quite a distance from their homes, as this must be eating into their budgets something awful!

The Oracle:

It might even hit the level of the mimium hourly wage...I believe in Europe and some other places, it's pretty close to that.....

The Oracle:

*minimum*...sorry.

SebK:

This kind of leads to another question, what is America doing to improve public transportation? We are so far behind in this. The one thing that we are looking at is, would it be cheaper to fly or drive on vacation?

The Oracle:

At least you can still afford one!.....Some cities are doing something, Chicago, NY, SF I think are going to require all their taxis and buses and so on to be hybrid, but it's really a drop in the bucket. It's all about money- we could have made these vehicles years ago....we can fly to Mars, certainly we could have done this.

Sequoia:

Yes but I already only go into town on Sat. for errands!

The Oracle:

Maybe do more on-line stuff, shopping, etc.?

Rene Hollis:

I drastically changed my lifestyle - I quit working. LOL

The Oracle:

Bless you! Luck you were able to do that!

Jesse:

don't drive--I walk or ride bus/bike

The Oracle:

Good for you! Healthier AND save $!!
