Did you know in the state of Ohio you have to have an insurance policy of 100,000.00 on your pitbull

??? You also have to have the dog registered. Is it just me or is this BS?? Obviously, I have a pitbull but I can't believe this.
Whipsaw:

That is BS. If your dog mauls a child, damages will easily exceed ten times that amount. I would go for at least a million in liability coverage. The problem is not the breed of dog, rather the breed of owner that often chooses this dog. I am not judging you for having a pit, many owners and their pets are great, but are punished unfairly for the actions of the less responsible majority.

Mac....Of Moot and Mac:

Same with drunk and reckless drivers....We all have to pay for these idiots.

Live QnA Team:

Yeah I see your point but I have already checked policy amount's and that's over 500.00 a year and I think it's BS. My dog isn't a bad pitbull he's really a big puss I have seen him in the last 2 weeks get his butt kicked. He's still a pup and has never been around other dogs. But a mutt and boxer done made him cry. I had to come to his rescue. Now the idea to keep my dog I am supposed to buy this insurance... It's just sad all have to pay for this and it's the owner not the dog you are right. Not to mention the people who have no hearts and fight these animals

Whipsaw:

I understand your resentment, but I will admit I have three toy poodle mixes that are quite vicious. I have $500,000 in liability coverage on them, it costs me almost $600 per year. But I have over a million dollars to lose, and I will NOT bet it on the behavior of my dogs. My brother has a pit bull, and like you, he says he will take responsibility for his dog, will take the risk, however, the risk is not his to take, he has nothing to lose if his dog flips and attacks someone. As long as he doesn't have a million bux in the bank, I think he should be required to buy insurance......just in case.

Live QnA Team:

Well you make a great point and I understand. I guess everybody's situation is different.

Whipsaw:

Just wanted to say a couple things quick, first, most people have this kind of insurance on their pets, no matter the breed, cuz this is a common coverage on a homeowners liability policy. Second, good luck with your pup, I am sure you can find a place where the law won't stick its nose in your biz, you are clearly one of the good guys =)

Mac....Of Moot and Mac:

This breed was designed to kill....Do the math, because whoever your dog maims or kills will....................

Dick:

IT should be mandatory in all states and on some other breeds too.

Live QnA Team:

Yeah Mac they will do the math quick but I know i wouldn't have this problem my dog wouldn't bite anyone. I think as the owner that's a risk we should be able to take and deal with the consequences if that happened. I know this wouldn't be a problem for me so it's a risk I would be willing to take, and it's a choice I should be able to make. I see it as another way to waste money and fill someone's pockets

Pete:

Hi mac, saw pictures of you at stitchy's site, Cool Dude! Anyway, I don't agree, any dog can be a good dog with the right owners. It's not right to stigmatize a breed based on a few incidents. Pit bulls can be, and are for most people, very sweet, people pleasing animals. Because they are so smart, they have been exploited by sick people to be vicious and fighters. That is not any dog's natural intent. Unfortunately, the smart breeds are easily trained to do what their stupid owners want. The people should be stigmatized, not the breed.

Mel:

Real: My brother had a pit bull that he had raised from a puppy along with his infant daughter. When she was almost 2 that dog jumped her and bite her several times before we could get to them. She has scars on her face and one arm from that attack. That dog was a family pet and each of us would have sworn that he would never attack or hurt anyone. We were wrong. My brother took the dog out in the back yard and shot him. There are a number of cities and counties here in the US where ownership of a pit bull is illegal.

Albert Page:

I have no problem with PitBulls as I know of one in particular that is as gentle as a bunny. However, I can tell you this:
In Columbus, on the South End within the neighborhood of Parsons Ave and Lockbourne Rd there are 4 houses that specifically raise Pit Bulls for dog fights. Quite often some of these dogs end up being sold as pets to people there such as in the trailer park off Hilock and on Barthman and even up to Hanford St.
Dominos Pizza on Lockbourne and Williams had had no less than 5 dogs put into their dumpster - all different times. And every time they were dead and half of their bodies were missing. One in particular had been pregnant and her stomach was chewed open. Their were dead half-developed babies hanging out of her stomach. You'd be surprised to learn that dog fights happen much more frequently and on a much larger scale than you would suspect.
Perhaps....this law isn't to protect humans. Maybe it is to protect the dogs from humans. If the insurance is higher - then it costs more. This keeps the dogs out of hands of people that would otherwise treat them poorly and expose them to lives of violence and an inevitable unfair and all-too-soon death.

Live QnA Team:

I believe you and yes it's a problem. It makes my stomach turn reading these stories. Poor pitbulls.

Albert Page:

Yes, it is sick. So, be glad that you can offer your dog a home that will provide it with love and a family. Had it fallen into the wrong hands - it may have ended up being thrown into a ring with 10 other dogs and then killed dramatically.
Remember, their are always two sides to every story. Yes, there are Pit Bulls that have caused tons of damage to people. And part of that is from the dog fighting and dogs being bred for that.
The other side is we need to stop dog fights. They are disgusting. How do you go about stopping that though? Requiring high insurance could be one way to solve that.

Live QnA Team:

I see your point..... It may be a way to help the problem. I guess time will tell

Pete:

That's too sad. No breed is inherently bad. So sad that it's come to that!

Live QnA Team:

Yeah it's so sad for me and Smokey my pit. I have no idea how to handle this. So many choices to make and no time really. My dad thinks the dog will be a problem especially since he has a cop right behind his house. So I hate this situation. I hope one of my brothers or relatives can keep him till I come back south...

Pete:

Good luck. I'm sorry you are going through this!

Mamamadu:

i agree
