One of our computers is having a problem starting XP. I attempted safe mode but it keeps doing...

the same thing. How can I get it to do a system restore from a dos prompt? Is there anything else I can do short of reformatting the hard drive? All my data files, music, movies and pictures are stored on an external hard drive so I don't mind reformatting, I just don't know if it's necessary yet. Can you help me, I'm a novice but a quick study?
COOLINIT:

My XP recently crashed. I can't get it to the boot screen. The pc turns on, but that's as far as it goes. I'm now using a knockoff pc loaded with vista >:-(

Proof:

boot from the windows xp cd rom and then use ASR. to be able to to run and ASR on your pc you should have created the ASR diskettes earlier. if you haven't created it, then it's going to be tough task. there is no point in giving command once you are inside the windows xp since the cmd and the gui are one and the same.

Skeeter:

Hi Jackie, you could try this and if it doesn't work, let me know through comments. I have other suggestions I can offer if you let me know what kind of computer you have. Try this
A repair install does just what it says; it fixes Windows by restoring critical system files from the install DVD, but it won't overwrite your installed programs, saved data, or system settings.

To initiate a repair install, boot from your Windows CD. Do NOT choose the option to repair from within the recovery console; instead hit Enter to install XP. After accepting the user agreement, you'll be asked to select the installation of Windows you wish to repair.

Select the install you need to repair, and then sit back and let the CD do its thing. When it's finished, you should have a functioning copy of Windows.

A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.

Skeeter:

You are more then welcome Jackie, I hope it helps. It sounds like your husband put together a good system.

CONSERVATIVEATHEIST:

I think my hard drive is failing. I'm posting a new question, I hope you see it TJ.

Skeeter:

This is why I wanted you to try the repair so not all hard drive failures are predictable, but by analyzing many of the mechanical attributes over time, some failures are predictable and this is what S.M.A.R.T. does. S.M.A.R.T. measures many attributes of the user's drive over time and decides if they are moving out of tolerance.

Rene Hollis:

Type the following in a command prompt:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

CONSERVATIVEATHEIST:

I'll have to try later, because I can't find the XP CD it was installed from, just another version from another computer. The one in question is running Pro and I will have to wait till "the great put stuff away in it's proper place guy" gets home and tells me where that proper place moved to on it's own.

CONSERVATIVEATHEIST:

I can't get to a command prompt. It reloads the same screen that I mentioned in my comment above.

Rene Hollis:

Click on Start/Run and type in cmd.exe then type that line in there.

Oamey:

i think you have the same virus I had i had to reinstall xp

CONSERVATIVEATHEIST:

I'll give it a try TJ. Thanks. BTW, It's a system my husband put together. It's got an Intel motherboard, with a p4 3.0 processor, 512 mb ddr2 ram, 36 GB hard drive, 800 FSB.

CONSERVATIVEATHEIST:

When I get the first screen that offers me safe mode, safe mode with networking, last known good configuration or start windows normally, etc. I've tried each option and it just returns me to the same screen. I get no further help.

Demon:

Is the run link a command prompt ?? thx!
