Did they reduce the sentences on crack because of racial issues, or to save money? (See link)

Or was there other reasons? Do you think this needed to happen? Maybe a different way to deal with it?http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/12/washington/12sentence.html?ref=us

Saw that! Actually never understand why powder form versus hard form was so different in the sentencing, as well as stereotype. People love to judge and call a user a "crack head" but it somehow seems glamorous for models, lawyers, doctors, (remember Studio 54? me either, but,, lol) ... I'm just saying! A drug user is a drug user, regardless. Never saw why 3 grams of blow was better in possession then $ 200 worth of crack rock. Drugs are drugs, in whatever form. I honestly think this was in relation to the sellers, which are mostly black Americans, and a way to blame Urban communities for the demise in society. Funny, (well not really) ... when the realities are that many White Americans are getting high, with meth, pot, heroin, and crack, but limited media coverage. Drugs are awful,, how about prescription drug usage. Don't folks realize that it's mostly white folks using? I honestly think the media likes to play the race card.

Brett:

Yeah, it makes me wonder if the original intention of the law was a racial one. And now are they trying to fix it because it was, or are they only fixing to save money by releasing almost 20,000 inmates early? And will these ones that are released recieve/be offered treatment, and what happens to the ones that go out and get arrested for the same thing? Did this ultimatley solve anything?

Imponderables:

I honestly and while some might disagree with my opinion, see this as continued race conflict, and prejudice against the black communities. I've become more empathetic the older I get to so much, because I recognize how the media portrays and only reports crimes in black communities. On on hand it is glamorized, (remember the cute model who snorted coke?) however, compare that to the media fed image of a common crack whore? What's the difference? I actually don't agree with drug use, or drug dealers, however, the sentencing is not standard and greatly based on image of it's users,, which.. ironically is NOT, and I repeat NOT, typical of what is portrayed. White Americans are predominant users, and if you want to make a buck off rich upper middle class kids, well... I'm must saying.. I understand! I don't' agree, but I do understand.

Brett:

Hey what has happened with the court case in Texas about the murderer whose country doesn't want him to be tried.

Imponderables:

?

Brett:

It was a court case that you posted a while back that you wanted everyone to be aware of, I might have the details wrong... or confused with another case.

Imponderables:

Don't think that was me! Last thing I posted was in regards to a rapist that won the lottery while being on probation. TY Mstang for the nice commentary. =)

?Santa's Helper?:

I have watched many people quit crack, put some meat back on their bones, and then relapse and age ten years in a week. Maybe they shortened the sentences to save the taxpayer the expense of burying them. I have been told it is the best high money can buy, once, and then the user spends the rest of his/her life trying to recapture it. I have seen brilliant people become permanently as dumb as a post from using crack. I'm all for shortening the sentences on the users, since the act carries its own sentence. I would like to see all producers and distributors thrown into the same cell with their customers, with no product anywhere near them and see if they can survive the night.

Brett:

lol, yeah that sounds like it could be more than punishment, but inhumane torture!! Let them have it!
